The Loreleis - Philophony Album Cover

The Loreleis, an all-female a capella group at UNC Chapel Hill, asked me to design the art for their newest album, Philophony. I was especially eager to work on this project because it allowed me to break out of the world of clean lines, muted color palettes, and corporate identities. Within days, we had a vibrant, organic design that everyone was excited about. Philophony will be released at the end of March and I can’t wait to see how the final product turns out!

For this project, I worked closely with Talking Eyes Media to produce a short promotional motion graphic for Encore.org’s Purpose Prize competition. In addition to the motion graphic, I also produced graphics used in the video profiles of the 2009 winners.

On a personal note: Working with non-profits is also a rewarding experience, and working with Encore.org was no exception. I found this project to be especially exciting because I worked with one of their 2008 winners, Jock Brandis and his organization, the Full Belly Project in Uganda in 2006. Thanks to the Purpose Prize and other awards, Jock Brandis and the Full Belly Project  are able to design and distribute income-generating agricultural devices to improve life in developing countries.

This content was created as part of PoweringANation.org, a News21 project funded by the Carnegie and Knight Foundations. Powering a Nation was conceived, reported and produced entirely by student journalists at the School of Journalism and Mass Communication at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

During the summer of 2009, our team covered stories on a wide range of climate change related topics such as mountaintop removal in West Virginia, the food industry’s dependence on fossil fuels, and wind farms in Texas. Our work has won multiple awards from the College Photographer of the Year competition, the National Press Photographers’ Association and the Society for News Design.

As lead designer on the project, I worked with a talented team of designers and programmers to develop the site in Joomla while creating graphics for various stories and producing the introductory motion graphic seen above.

I was fortunate enough to take a class in 3D design with the renowned infographic artist, Alberto Cairo. This interactive piece on the Morehead Planetarium’s upcoming renovation was my final class project. Throughout the project and during the following semester as Alberto’s teaching assistant, I certainly learned a great deal about working in Maya – but I am eager to expand my skills and learn even more.

This was my final class project in Advanced Programming, a challenging class that focused on objection-oriented programming in ActionScript 2.0 and covered basic HTML, CSS, PHP, MySQL and XML topics. The project was built in AS2 with as much dynamic content as possible. And while the project was centered around programming and usability, I put in a few extra hours making sure the overall design fit my standards.

This was a midterm project for Advanced Programming, a challenging class that focused on objection-oriented programming in ActionScript 2.0 and covered basic HTML, CSS, PHP, MySQL and XML topics. At this point, we had covered a good deal of AS2 and this was our first multi-level project using object-oriented programming.
